CURRICULUM VITAE
About me
One of my greatest passions in life is nature. I have always had an immense interest in nature and wildlife, which triggered me to study biology. It has also motivated me to go abroad, for example to experience the beautiful South African nature areas. I continue to want to learn more about all kinds of ecosystems and wildlife, and how to preserve them. And the more I learn, the more fascinated and motivated I get.
Another passion of mine is sports. Competing at the highest level of underwater hockey and going to numerous international tournaments has taught me much about myself and about working in a team. Combining these two passions throughout my life has brought me great joy, amazing national and international experiences, and unforgettable life lessons.
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, where I did most of my studies and a variety of other activities. Learn more about my studies, extracurricular activities, and work experience below. As a person and colleague, I am active, eager to learn, flexible, and trustworthy. I enjoy working in a team, take initiative, and have eye for detail.

My job includes field research on flora and fauna and writing reports. Additionally, I am involved in communication tasks.
Research assistent at Elephants Alive &
General assistent at Bring the Elephant Home (South Africa)
Sept 2018 - Dec 2018
Both Elephants Alive (EA) and Bring the Elephant Home (BTEH) are research-based organisations that aim to aid elephant conservation through activities such as research, raising awareness, and community programs. I have worked over 540 hours as an intern at both organizations for a combined three months. At EA I am involved in various projects, including research on bees, trees, and pheromones, tracking field days, office days, social media, and events. After completing my master thesis at BTEH, I supported them with a range of different tasks, varying from web pages, newsletters, organizing the database of the Elephant Specialist Advisory Group, a human-elephant mitigation toolkit, and grant applications. Although I was mainly based at EA in Hoedspruit, I continuously worked on various projects for BTEH, including a citizen science project in the Netherlands in collaboration with the Future For Nature Academy. Even back in the Netherlands I am still in close contact with BTEH about these projects.

Education
Master Environmental Biology
(Utrecht University)
Sept 2015 - June 2018
Within this master, I chose the specialization 'Ecology and Natural Resource Management'. A large part of this master is dedicated to research internships. In my first project I studied the biodiversity of the campus at Utrecht University. My second internship was at the ecological institute NIOO-KNAW, where I spent six-seven months studying the effect of large herbivores on woody vegetation in various rewilding projects in the Netherlands. I followed courses in Utrecht and Wageningen, and did an additional minor on Communication and Education with corresponding courses and an internship at the Amsterdam Royal Zoo (ARTIS). I finished my master with a literature review on the human-elephant conflict in South Africa, supervised by Antoinette van de Water of the Bring the Elephant Home Foundation.
Bachelor Biology
(Utrecht University, semester at Stellenbosch University)
Sept 2012 - July 2015
Most topics I chose to study during my bachelor were related to ecology and conservation. This trend continued when I studied a semester abroad at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) in 2014. I finished my bachelor with a literature thesis on the ecological effect of the return of wolves in the Netherlands, supervised by Leo Linnartz of Wolven in Nederland.
Pre-university education
Sept 2006 - June 2012
Graduated in 2012 from the Johan de Witt-Gymnasium in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, with a NG/NT (science) profile certificate.
Extracurricular activities
Besides experience gained from work and education, I built knowledge and experience through extracurricular activities. Please find a short summary with background information per topic below.
Ecology and conservation
My knowledge of biology started building when I was a young girl, trying to learn as much about wildlife as I could. At university I learned to look at nature from a different angle, to grasp some of it's complexity and immense value. To expand knowledge on wildlife and conservation, I went to various seminars and workshops, complemented with a great deal of self-study, for example through books and documentaries. Furthermore, various excursions and field-days in both the Netherlands and abroad continue to enrich me. Volunteering at two inspiring organisations in South Africa only makes me more motivated to continue to learn more, and put that knowledge to good use.
Communication, education and coaching
I originally gained experience in education and communication through sports, where I give clinics and beginners courses, and more recently started coaching at club- and national level. I realized that I greatly enjoy sharing knowledge and teaching skills about something I am very enthusiastic about, and wanted to be able to share my passion for nature in a similar manner. I have learned much about my own interests and skills in this field from a minor in communication and education and an internship at a zoo, and continue to practice by working at a museum and coaching the youth selection of underwater hockey. Rather than only teaching, I enjoy the process of product and course development as well.
Organizing and coordinating
Studies, work, and sports have always stimulated me to organize and plan my life rather strictly to be able to combine everything properly. Additionally, going abroad in 2014 and 2018 required a fair amount of organization skills. Since around 2010 I actively participate in the organisation and coordination of various small and large events. Such activities have often been sports-related, such as clinics, promotion, teambuilding activities, fundraising events, tournaments, and training weekends. In 2017, I co-founded a new underwater hockey club in Utrecht (UVO) where I was chairman for 1,5 years. As I joined the Future For Nature Academy in 2018 I plan to organize various nature-related activities, starting with a citizen-science project early 2019 for Bring the Elephant Home.
Personal development
I have learned a lot about myself, including my strengths and limitations, from a number of experiences. I find this very valuable as it helps me get the most out of different situations. For example, going abroad learned me to 'go with the flow', and to create opportunities and make the most of it. Going on excursions made me realize that my passion for nature is deeply rooted and I should continue to incorporate nature in my lifestyle or work. Personality tests made me understand myself better, as well as shed light how my personality fits those of others. Being in the national selection of underwater hockey taught me to commit to a goal and not give up. It also made me appreciate how everybody has different strengths which, when correctly joined, make a group of people a close and strong team. Training for, and going to World Championships has learned me how I react under pressure, and through which type of coaching I perform best. Lastly, the assistance of a sports psychologists has lately made me even more aware of how valuable it is to reflect on situations and to learn from them.
